John's prologue is not narrative but a deliberately crafted overture — closer to hymn or philosophical poem than story — and every word in it is chosen to be heard twice: once against a Greek intellectual background, once against the Hebrew Bible.
Λόγος (logos, Strong 3056) was already loaded vocabulary. In Greek philosophy, especially Stoicism, the logos was the rational principle structuring the universe — the "reason" by which the cosmos holds together and can be understood. Educated Greek readers would have caught that resonance immediately. But John is not borrowing Stoic metaphysics; the deeper background is Jewish. "In the beginning" (Ἐν ἀρχῇ) is a direct echo of Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." And in the Hebrew scriptures, God's "word" is not inert speech but active power: he speaks, and things exist. John 1:3 makes this explicit — "All things were made through him." The Word here is the same creative utterance of Genesis, now identified as a person.
The verse's three clauses build a case with careful grammar:
- "In the beginning was the Word" — ἦν (imperfect of εἰμί, Strong 1510) signals continuous existence, not a starting point. The Word did not come into being at the beginning; the Word already was.
- "the Word was with God" — πρὸς τὸν Θεόν. The preposition πρός (Strong 4314) implies not mere proximity but relationship, even a kind of face-to-face engagement — distinction of persons.
- "the Word was God" — Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος. Θεός here lacks the definite article that τὸν Θεόν had in the previous clause. This is a famous point of Greek grammar: the anarthrous (article-less) predicate noun before the verb, following Colwell's rule, indicates a qualitative predicate rather than mere identity-with-the-definite-God — the Word possesses the full nature of God, without being interchangeable with "God the Father" mentioned just before. The clause distinguishes the Word from the Father while affirming full deity.
The three clauses together assert what the church later formalized at Nicaea: the Word is eternal, personally distinct from the Father, and fully God — one being, not a lesser or created deity.
Then John identifies who this Word is: "the Word became flesh and lived among us" (John 1:14). σὰρξ ἐγένετο — became flesh — is the shock. The eternal, creating Word entered material, mortal human existence. Athanasius, in On the Incarnation, sums the logic of the whole prologue in one line: "God became man so that man might become God" — not meaning humans become divine by nature, but that the Word's taking on flesh is the means by which fallen humanity is restored to fellowship with God.
Historical-critical scholarship has debated whether the prologue originated as an independent hymn later adapted by the evangelist, on the grounds of its distinct rhythm and vocabulary compared to the rest of the Gospel. That's a plausible literary observation about composition history; it doesn't touch the meaning of the text as it stands, which the church has read as the clearest single statement in the New Testament of the deity and incarnation of Christ.
