Were the Nephilim, Anakim, and Goliath connected?
Theological reading

The text links them, though how tightly is genuinely debated.

Genesis 6:4 introduces the Nephilim as offspring of "God's sons" and "men's daughters" — "mighty men... men of renown" (Genesis 6:4). That generation is wiped out in the flood. But Numbers 13:33 explicitly ties the Anakim back to them: "There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim." So scripture itself makes the connection, not just a later inference — though how a pre-flood category survives the flood to reappear in Canaan is left unexplained; the text doesn't stop to account for it, and Genesis 6:4 itself notes Nephilim were around "and also after that," suggesting more than one origin or occurrence.

The Anakim show up repeatedly as a byword for terrifying size and strength: Deuteronomy 9:2's "Who can stand before the sons of Anak?", the spies' fear in Numbers 13:32-33, and Deuteronomy 2:21's note that "Yahweh destroyed them from before Israel." Joshua 11:21-22 records their near-total destruction under Joshua, with survivors remaining specifically "in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod" — Philistine cities.

That detail matters: Goliath comes from Gath (1 Samuel 17:4), one of the very cities named as an Anakite refuge. 1 Chronicles 20:6-8 confirms the line continued there — "these were born to the giant in Gath." So the thread runs: Nephilim → Anakim → the giant-clan of Gath, of which Goliath is the most famous member, with Og of Bashan (Deuteronomy 3:11) as a related but separate remnant of the Rephaim.

The chain is real in the text's own logic, not manufactured by later readers looking for a monster story — but the mechanics of transmission across the flood are simply not explained, and the tradition has argued over that gap for centuries rather than resolving it.
