Deuteronomy 28

Deuteronomy 28 falls near the end of Moses' final address to Israel, on the plains of Moab, just before they cross into the land without him. It follows the recitation of curses at Deuteronomy 27, where the people answered each one with "Amen" — binding themselves in advance to terms they had not yet lived under. Chapter 28 is the covenant's sanctions clause: what will happen if Israel keeps this treaty with Yahweh, and what will happen if it does not. The blessings run fourteen verses; the curses run fifty-four. The imbalance is the chapter's own argument before any commentary is added.

28:1-14 Blessed in the city and blessed in the field

The blessings section is structured as call and consequence: "if you shall listen diligently to Yahweh your God's voice... that Yahweh your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth" (28:1). What follows is not abstract favor but itemized, agrarian, and political — basket and kneading trough, livestock and womb, rain in season, victory over enemies, becoming "the head, and not the tail" (28:13). This is the vocabulary of ancient Near Eastern treaty documents; Deuteronomy borrows the form of a suzerain-vassal covenant and fills it with Yahweh's own commitments. The blessings are not a doctrine of prosperity detached from obedience — they are explicitly conditional, twice stated (28:1, 28:9, 28:13) — nor are they a private, individual promise; the addressee throughout is the nation, and the referent is the land. Later texts echo this vocabulary without simply repeating it: Leviticus 26:3 sets the same terms, and Genesis 39:5 shows the same pattern of blessing operating on an individual, Joseph, inside a foreign house rather than the land. The chapter does not promise that every faithful Israelite prospers materially; it promises what covenant faithfulness as a nation secures nationally, in the land Yahweh is giving.

28:15-19 Cursed in the city and cursed in the field

The curse section mirrors the blessing's own phrases almost word for word — "cursed in the city," "cursed in the field," basket and kneading trough again (28:16-17) — a formal device making clear these are not two different topics but two outcomes of one covenant. Nothing new is threatened; everything blessed is simply reversed. The reason given is not obscure: "because you didn't listen to Yahweh your God's voice, to keep his commandments" (28:45). Some readers want the curses read as generic bad luck attaching to any nation; the text does not allow that reading — the curses are covenant discipline specifically, tied to Israel's particular relationship to Yahweh, not a universal claim that suffering equals guilt (a distinction the book of Job argues at length, though Job is not part of this corpus).

28:47 Because you didn't serve Yahweh with joyfulness

Buried inside the catalog of horrors is a diagnosis easy to skip past: the curses come "because you didn't serve Yahweh your God with joyfulness and with gladness of heart, by reason of the abundance of all things" (28:47). This is a sharper charge than mere disobedience. It says the failure was not only breaking rules but resenting the terms of a good life — treating abundance as a burden rather than a gift, serving grudgingly rather than gladly. The verse anticipates its own consequence with grim precision: because you would not serve joyfully in plenty, "you will serve your enemies... in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things" (28:48). The punishment fits by inversion — the same posture of service, stripped of everything that made it bearable.

28:53-57 You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters

The chapter's most severe material describes a besieged city so starved that parents secretly eat their own children (28:53-57), with the detail intensified by naming the "tender and delicate" man and woman specifically — those least suited to such conditions. This is not rhetorical excess for its own sake; siege cannibalism is attested elsewhere in the biblical record of Israel's later history (2 Kings mentions such famine, though that text is outside this corpus), and Deuteronomy is describing, in advance, what actually happened when Assyria and later Babylon besieged Israelite and Judean cities. The difficulty for readers is not whether this happened but what it says about Yahweh's role in it — the text attributes the outcome to Yahweh's action ("Yahweh will bring on you... a nation... he will besiege you," 28:49-52) without treating this as arbitrary cruelty; it is covenant curse working itself out through historical siege warfare, the specific penalty for the specific violation named at 28:15 and reiterated at 28:45.

28:63-68 Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples

The chapter closes not with destruction but with exile and psychological unraveling: "Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other" (28:64), and the survivors will have "a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and pining of soul" (28:65), no rest, no assurance of life, longing by morning for evening and by evening for morning (28:67). Verse 68 adds a detail that would have struck its first hearers hard: return "into Egypt again... by the way of which I told you that you would never see it again" — the exodus undone, offered for sale as slaves with "nobody will buy you" (28:68), a humiliation lower than slavery itself. Deuteronomy 28:46 calls the whole sequence "a sign and for a wonder... forever" — meant to be read, later, as confirmation rather than surprise. Centuries afterward, when judgment fell, Zechariah 1:6 records the exiles' own generation admitting the pattern: "Just as Yahweh of Armies determined to do to us, according to our ways and according to our practices, so he has dealt with us." The chapter is written to be recognized after the fact, not merely feared in advance.

What the chapter asks

Deuteronomy 28 presses the claim that covenant with God is not a private sentiment but a real relationship with real, national, historical consequences — that blessing and curse are not superstition but the terms Israel itself said "Amen" to. It asks whether a people can hear a good law and serve it "with joyfulness and with gladness of heart" (28:47), or whether abundance itself becomes the occasion for contempt. And it leaves standing, unresolved within this chapter, the question every later prophet and the rest of the biblical story will keep returning to: whether a curse this total is the end of the covenant, or whether the God who "rejoiced over you to do you good" (28:63) has, beyond the reversal, any word left to speak.
