Revelation 20 WEB
  1. 1 I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.
  2. 2 He seized the dragon, the old serpent, who is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years,
  3. 3 and cast him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time.
  4. 4 I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and such as didn't worship the beast nor his image, and didn't receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
  5. 5 The rest of the dead didn't live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
  6. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with him one thousand years.
  7. 7 And after the thousand years, Satan will be released from his prison
  8. 8 and he will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war, whose number is as the sand of the sea.
  9. 9 They went up over the width of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. Fire came down out of heaven from God and devoured them.
  10. 10 The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are also. They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
  11. 11 I saw a great white throne and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the sky fled away. There was found no place for them.
  12. 12 I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.
  13. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works.
  14. 14 Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
  15. 15 If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

What is happening

Revelation 20 falls in the long final vision that runs from chapter 19 to 22, John's account of what happens after the return of Christ pictured in 19:11-21 — the rider on the white horse defeating "the beast" and "the false prophet" and their armies. Chapter 20 answers the obvious next question: what becomes of Satan, of the dead, and of history itself, before the new heaven and new earth of chapters 21-22. It divides into three scenes: the binding of Satan and the thousand-year reign (20:1-6), Satan's release and final defeat (20:7-10), and the last judgment before the great white throne (20:11-15). John, exiled on Patmos, writes this as apocalyptic vision — "I saw" (εἶδον) marks each new scene, the standard formula of the whole book, not journalism but revelation given in images.

The passage, walked through

An angel descends "having the key of the abyss and a great chain" (20:1) and seizes "the dragon, the old serpent, who is the devil and Satan" (20:2) — the same figure introduced in chapter 12, now explicitly named with all four titles at once, so no reader can mistake who this is. He is bound and thrown into the ἄβυσσος, the abyss, "that he should deceive the nations no more until the thousand years were finished" (20:3). The purpose clause matters: the binding restrains deception of the nations specifically, not every form of evil or temptation.

Then thrones appear, and those given "judgment" reign with Christ — including "the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus" (20:4), the martyrs specifically named as vindicated. "This is the first resurrection" (20:5); those who share it are "blessed and holy," and "the second death has no power" over them (20:6) — a phrase that will matter later, when the lake of fire is itself called "the second death" (20:14). The chapter is already telling the reader what the ending means before it arrives.

After the thousand years, Satan is "released from his prison" (20:7) and goes out "to deceive the nations... Gog and Magog" (20:8) — a name pulled from Ezekiel 38-39 and used here not as a repeat of that scene but as shorthand for a final, massed rebellion. They besiege "the camp of the saints and the beloved city," and fire from heaven "devoured them" (20:9) — no battle, just consumption. The devil is "thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur," joining the beast and false prophet already there, "tormented day and night forever and ever" (20:10) — εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων, "into the ages of the ages," the strongest durative phrase Greek has.

Then the second judgment scene: "a great white throne and him who sat on it," before whom "the earth and the sky fled away" (20:11). The dead, "great and small," stand before it; "books were opened," and "another book... the book of life" (20:12). The dead are "judged... according to their works" (20:12, repeated 20:13) — a phrase that appears three times in six verses and cannot be softened away; final judgment in this chapter is explicitly according to deeds, not apart from them. Death and Hades themselves are "thrown into the lake of fire" and named "the second death" (20:14). The chapter's last line is stark and unadorned: "If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire" (20:15).

Where readers have disagreed

The chapter's most contested word is not in the Greek text itself but in what interpreters have built on top of it: "a thousand years," χίλια ἔτη, appears six times (20:2-7), the only place in scripture where this specific span is named. Premillennialists read it as a literal future reign of Christ on earth following his return, preceding the final judgment — taking the sequence of chapters 19 and 20 as chronological. Amillennialists read the thousand years as figurative, describing the present reign of the martyred and vindicated dead with Christ in heaven throughout the church age, with Satan's "binding" referring to the restraint on his power to prevent the gospel reaching the nations (cf. the Great Commission) rather than a future event. Postmillennialists read it as a golden age of gospel success within history, before Christ's return. All three have been held by serious, creedal Christians; none is heresy, and the chapter's genre — apocalyptic vision, thick with recycled Old Testament imagery like Gog and Magog — is precisely the kind of text where confident chronological literalism outruns what the images were built to do. What is not disputed across these readings is the outcome: Satan's final defeat, a real resurrection and judgment, and a real division at the book of life.

What it asks of a reader

The chapter refuses to let judgment remain notional. Everyone stands; everyone is judged "according to their works"; and only one thing decides the outcome named in 20:15 — whether a name is "found written in the book of life." The chapter does not explain how a name gets there; that is the argument of the rest of the New Testament, not this vision. What Revelation 20 insists on is that the record exists, the throne is real, and no one is exempt from appearing before it — a claim scripture makes and this exposition is not free to blunt.
